About the Author


Sunil Bhooshan is currently Professor and Head of Department in Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) at Waknaghat near Shimla which is a part of the group of educational institutions of the Jaypee group of industries. The author graduated from IIT Delhi, and completed his MS and Ph D degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

Dr Bhooshan has a balanced background of industry and academics. He has worked in Hewlett Packard (now Agilent Technologies) at Santa Rosa, USA, as a Member of Technical Staff. He taught briefly at IIT Kanpur and was a consultant to various companies in India where he helped develop parabolic dish antennas and other microwave components. He has more than fifty research papers published in reputed journals and presented in international conferences. He is a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and WSEAS (World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society) societies.

Do not buy

Wow. Can't believe how good the reviews on this book are. I wasn't expecting much as most "Intro", "Dummy" and "Beginner" books are often very, very basic. This book dumbs things down to a whole new level. I honestly can't imagine how anyone would get anything of value from this book. You would be much better off using Google search and reading from free sources about Lean and Six Sigma.

Now, aside from just disliking the book in general, there are a whole slew of grammatical and spelling errors. It reads like it was written in French and then thrown into Google Translator. Some very poorly worded sentences. Your first hint is on the back cover of the "3rd Edition". The last "word" on the back cover is revenuesandhenceprofits. The crazy thing is that there is a ton of space left. They could have fit the words no problem but for some reason decided to create one big word.

From just my last few minutes of reading (and examples like this exist on nearly every page):

-- "Definitely not - you need know no formula to avoid waste." = pg 77
-- "How hard is the MBB exam? Serious business it is." = pg 87

The list goes on and on. After 90 pages I cannot continue, I'm not going to try and finish the book. Save your money and buy a different book. Lean and Six Sigma are important topics and there are much better ways to be introduced to either topic.

Despite several four and five star reviews, this book is poorly written in a "folksy" way where he uses phrases like 'believe you me'. It's truly the antithesis of a business book. The author also needs an editor to catch his numerous misspellings and other defects (which I found ironic in a book about Six Sigma). Remember, you get what you pay for.

so realize that it was not so easy to get that many copies

I ordered 90 copies of this book published in 2003, so realize that it was not so easy to get that many copies. IN the end, I received all in 4 deliveries, the last package approximately 1 week after promised date. The fact of receiving the full order number was more important to me than the delivery date. Prices were quite good.

Excellent Primer or Refresher

This book is an excellent primer or refresher course on the basics of finance and accounting in business. This book is clearly not aimed at finance or accounting folks working in business today as the presented material is far too high level and basic. However, if it has been some years since you have dealt with this material in school, if you have always been on the periphery of this material at work, or if you have never encountered these subjects, then this is a great book to get you going.

The very thought of the subject matter might make some sleepy, but credit to the authors for covering this subject in a short, concise, and relevant way. To the extent that a book of this type could be considered a "page turner" I think this book is it. The subjects are covered using every day language in an efficient and quick moving manner. You never get bogged down in any one subject or esoteric detail and there is nothing academic about the writing style.

On the back cover of the book it is mentioned that the Harvard Business Essentials is designed to provide "comprehensive advice"... While this is clearly marketing speak, it is still quite untrue. There is nothing comprehensive about this book so folks should be careful about taking the Harvard name and the notion of "comprehensive advice" as if this is some sort of definitive text on the subject of finance in business. The material is at the level of the most basic introductory course and if you go in understanding this and desire something to either get you going on the subject or refresh your memory from long ago study, I think this book will fit the bill nicely.

A nice survey of financial reporting

The book contains a number of good articles, introducing some important, basic accounting and finance concepts for non-financial managers. The chapters on Financing Operations and Growth, Budgeting, Practical Tools for Management Decisions and Valuation Concepts were the most informative and relevant. Others, like Taxation and The Time Value of MOney were too simplistic. An OK book if you have limited time to devote to the subject, but it really won't do much more than introduce you to some useful vocabulary, so you won't feel completely intimidated when dealing with your finance staff.

Thomas De Quincey was an obsessive. He was obsessed with Wordsworth and Coleridge, whose Lyrical Balladsprovided the script to his life, and by the idea of sudden death. Running away from school to pursue the two poets, De Quincey insinuated himself into their world. Basing his sensibility on Wordsworth’s and his character on Coleridge’s, he forged a triangle of unusual psychological complexity.

Aged twenty-four, De Quincey replaced Wordsworth as the tenant of Dove Cottage, the poet’s former residence in Grasmere. In this idyllic spot he followed the reports of the notorious Ratcliffe Highway murders of 1811, when two families, including a baby, were butchered in their own homes. In his opium-soaked imagination the murderer became a poet while the poet became a murderer. Embedded in On Murder as One of the Fine Arts, De Quincey’s brilliant series of essays, Frances Wilson finds the startling story of his relationships with Wordsworth and Coleridge.

Opium was the making of De Quincey, allowing him to dissolve self-conflict, eliminate self-recrimination, and divest himself of guilt. Opium also allowed him to write, and under the pseudonym “The Opium-Eater” De Quincey emerged as the strangest and most original journalist of his age. His influence has been considerable. Poe became his double; Dostoevsky went into exile with Confessions of an English Opium-Eater in his pocket; and Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, George Orwell, Alfred Hitchcock, and Vladimir Nabokov were all De Quincey devotees.

There have been other biographies of Thomas De Quincey, but Guilty Thing is the first to be animated by the spirit of De Quincey himself. Following the growth of his obsessions from seed to full flowering and tracing the ways they intertwined, Frances Wilson finds the master key to De Quincey’s vast Piranesian mind. Unraveling a tale of hero worship and revenge, Guilty Thing brings the last of the Romantics roaring back to life and firmly establishes Wilson as one of our foremost contemporary biographers.

The Opium-Eater

A sharp, well written book for the person enthralled with Thomas De Quincey, or who may be especially interested in the lives of the English poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge.

My problem here was that I had no knowledge of De Quincey prior to reading Frances Wilson's biography of him. I now know he was an intelligent, but drugged-up and perpetually poverty-stricken writer of the nineteenth century. However, once done with this book, I was at a loss over why I had spent time learning about De Quincey's misspent personal life, given this reading time might have been used more profitably investigating other more worthy people who have populated the past.

Invaluable radiographic reference!

Although the title of this book sounds extremely dry, unapproachable, and cumbersome, this book is a well-organized compilation of every type of unusual looking radiograph for every part of the human body. In my job as an Army physical therapist, I commonly have to screen plain radiographs. This reference has been invaluable to myself and others that work in my clinic, especially when evaluating foot and ankle films. There are several (more than a dozen) accessory bones that may be present, and these are all very well mapped out, each with a radiographic example, explanation, and key points to consider when evaluating each specific view. Excellent reference text!!

Tough challenge to go through all the pages, but that is what I recommend to all my residents in order to know what to look for in their next shift when they think the see something pathologic. That is wat I actually still do after so many years in radiology. On the bookshelf where I report MSK images and saved a good few misses for me over the years.
