Good Quick Overview of Agile in JIRA

This was a great overview of the agile capabilities that have been added to JIRA.
Note that the book is very short: if you want a full practical example of a project from finish to end, this isn't the book for you.
I was happy that it included the following:
- Ranking and sorting
- Quick overview of JQL filters
- When to use Kanban or Agile boards
- A pretty "whizz-bang" demo of the Agile Cards add-on

In short, a good overview that will get you up and running quickly.

Hanafis coming back!

This work is a translation of the hadith of Imam Muhammad ibn al Hasan Ash Shaybani, who one of the two major student of Imam Abu Hanifa. The hadith are transmitted from his teacher, Imam Abu Hanifa himself. In today's day and age, it is a significant translation because groups have sprung up that are claiming that Abu Hanifa was not familiar with many hadith, or that the Hanafi juristic school is not based on hadith (transmissions from the Prophet and his Companions). This work proves otherwise.

The translation of the work is great. Abdassammad Clarke's translation is lucid and easily read. The Arabic is included with the English. In addition, even the chain of transmitters (sanad) has been translated. Imam Muhammad comments on the juristic rulings that are drawn from each hadith, sometimes adding his agreement or disagreement with the other jurists of the time, such as Ibrahim An Nakh'i, etc.

What makes the work even more useful for the non-Arabic speaking Hanafi are the numerous appendices that come with the work. It includes an introduction that details the position of Imam Abu Hanifa and his students in hadith, along with the reasons that some weakened Abu Hanifa in hadith. It covers his life, as well as Imam Muhammad's. An appendix at the end puts in one place all the positions where Abu Hanifa differed from Ibrahim An Nakh'i, who was his teacher's teacher. And it has a list of all the important men in the chain of transmitters, along with their grading of weak or strong.

Bottomline: get the book, for it is a gem! You will learn more about the Hanafi maddhab, and its basis in hadith, than anything else.

The Kitâb al-Âthâr (Book of Traditions) was the first book composed in Islam after the generation of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam). The author Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah (d.150/767) was the first to record the science of Islamic law and organise it in to chapters systematically. The version translated here from the original Arabic by Abdassamad Clarke is the one narrated by his student, Imâm Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ash-Shaybânî (d. 189/805).

The publishers, Turtah Publishing have added a preface and introduction to the work which includes a biography of Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah and Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî as well as additional information on the structure of the book, the technical usage employed by Imâm Muḥammad in addition to other useful information such as the types of hadith and the history of taqlîd (to follow or to imitate). The contents are detailed and well laid out. The only modification of the book, Kitâb al-Âthâr, itself is the inclusion of chapter headings i.e. Purification, Prayer, Fasting etc which makes it easier to navigate and read. The publishers have also included footnotes sourcing the hadith from the classical works of hadith in addition to adding commentary where necessary to expand upon a narration which is extremely useful for explanatory purposes. The appendices found at the end of this book are excellent. There is a whole chapter listing cases in which Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî and/or Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah differed from Ibrâhîm an-Nakha'î (d. 96/715) or some of the Companions. There is also an appendix listing the narrations from other than Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah as well as a rijâl listing the narrators and the major hadith collectors who transmitted their hadith. The Index is very useful and has been arranged by verdicts of the Companions and Early Muslims as well as listed by subject. Both are very helpful.

The Kitâb al-Âthâr is composed of twenty chapters (not including the publishers preface, introduction and appendices) which are as follows:

The narrations begin with the original Arabic and are followed by the English translation. They are dictated by Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî from his teacher Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah. This importantly includes the isnad i.e. chain of narration as given by Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî for each and every narration. The imâm then comments on the juristic rulings drawn from each narration within the context of the teachings of Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah. He concludes each narration with his comments in which he may concur with the ruling or he may disagree and state his alternative opinion or he may agree with the ruling by adding something to it. Here is an example where student (Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî) and teacher (Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah) disagree with the teacher (Ibrâhîm an-Nakha'î) of their teacher (Ḥammâd ibn Abi Sulaymân (d.120/738)):

"124. Muhammad said, "Abû Ḥanîfah informed us from Ḥammâd that Ibrâhîm said, `If one wakes up in the morning without having done the witr then there is no witr.'"

Muhammad said, "We do not adhere to this. One does the witr in any case except at that time at which prayer is abhorrent; when the sun rises, in the middle of the day up until the declination, or at the redness of sunset until it has set. That is the verdict of Abû Ḥanîfah.""

This was a common occurrence during the formative period of Islamic law [alternative opinions]. There are even instances where Imâm Muḥammad ash-Shaybânî respectfully disagrees on certain rulings with his teacher Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah [and other Imâms], though that being the case he still maintained allegiance to his authority, School and methodology.

It should be understood that a majority of traditions found in this work are from the Companions (ṣaḥâbah) or from the Followers (tâbi`ûn) or from the Followers of the Followers (tâbi' tâbi`ûn). Hence most of them are mawqûf narrations i.e. stopping short at the Companions or Followers without being ascribed to the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam). This is in addition to mursal traditions (ascribed to the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam) but stopping short at a Follower without mention of the Companion) which were accepted as authoritative by Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah and Imâm Mâlik ibn Anas (d.179/795) as well as their contemporaries. As Imâm Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabarî (d. 310/923) has stated, "The Followers were absolutely unanimously agreed upon the acceptability of mursal hadith, and we have no transmission from any of them rejecting it nor from any of the imâms after them until the end of the second century." Regardless, it should be noted that Imâm Abû Ḥanîfah only accepted ṣaḥîḥ traditions from trustworthy narrators as found in this work.

I gained a lot from this book and even had answers to questions I didn't even know I had! For example, in a state of wuḍûʼ, you may end up tasting some food. It is common practice to then rinse your mouth and not have the need to renew your wuḍûʼ. However, I didn't ever ask or know the source of this practice. There is a narration in this work where the Messenger of Allah (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam) was brought some meat which he tasted and then he called for some water. He washed his hands and rinsed his mouth without renewing wuḍûʼ. Though some may just follow this action as logic or common practice as I previously did, I believe as a Muslim we should know why we follow certain practices or acts so that they are not mere rituals/practices and this is where fiqh works come to life. This book will assist in that department however the most effective and correct method to achieve this is by learning at the hands of a teacher/scholar.

Overall, this is an excellent work and much needed English translation. The book consists of over seven hundred pages and is of very good quality. It is easy to read and contains invaluable knowledge whether you follow the Ḥanafî fiqh or not. It is of immense value. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this work and I will no doubt refer to it in the future too. The translation by Abdassamad Clarke is solid and the commentary where applicable by Ḥâfiz Riyâd Ahmad al-Multâni in the footnotes is accommodating. The preface, introduction and appendices are commendable and add important information to the work. It is a foundational historical Ḥanafî fiqh text. If you have any interest in fiqh or the very first collections of hadith then I would recommend you purchase this book.

FANTASTIC

GREAT BOOK!!!! As soon as this arrived in my mailbox I opened the book and began to read it being a huge Imam Abu Hanifa reader as well as a follower. This book covers pretty much all the basics from A-Z in Islam regarding Hanafi Fiqh. This is a must have book for Hanafi's. I often make refrences to this book all the time now and am always browsing through it to have a better understanding of it. The book is thick so don't think you will be able to read the book in one sitting. It will take some time.

Once upon a time...This was my thermo text when I took the class from the former director of flight test engineering at Edwards. He was a stickler for fundamentals and this was the text he chose. It covers all the fundamentals and is both comprehensible and thorough.
I had to buy a second one as the original one from class has a worn out binding.

If you like to read books with action in them then Plague is for you. It is non-stop!!! A virus attacks the animals, of the Serengeti, who attempt to take down the Security Forces that protect them from poachers. Some people that are bitten, also become virus controlled and attack anything living. A never ending battle evolves. Solid characters with a moving story.
5 star read only because the author grabs you in the first chapter and then holds your interest until you reach that last page.

Well where to begin... I love the Hank Boyd books and was wishing this was another, but instead it was an action lovers dream. Somewhere around the first third of the book when I had a second to breathe,i remember thinking this was how I felt the first time I read a Matt Reilly book. This book is unreal. If you enjoy action and monsters you should read this immediately. Matthew James is getting better with every book and now the only thing that I don't like is waiting for the next one. Bring on Dead Moon.

A Page Turner and a Good Read

This book was awesome. It pulled me in and I couldn't help myself - I wanted to keep reading until I found out about the WWII secret. I loved seeing the thoughts of the monsters as they 'remembered' their past and their human life. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed it.

About the Author

Anthony M. Graziano is Professor Emeritus, Psychology, at the State University of New York, Buffalo. He was Co-Director of the Research Center for Children and Youth and served as the Director of the Clinical Area. Graziano received the B.A. degree from Columbia College and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He completed a clinical internship and a postdoctoral fellowship in child-clinical psychology at the Devereux Foundation. From 1961 to 1968 he developed and operated the first behavioral treatment program in the country for children with autism. Graziano was the first to employ relaxation and systematic desensitization techniques to help teach self-control skills to children with autism. He also served briefly as the Acting Director of the Kennedy Center for children with developmental disabilities. He has been a consultant to agencies in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania.

 

Graziano's research and writing has focused on children and families, and has included: child psychopathology; developmental disabilities; the treatment of childhood disorders; children's fears and phobias; behavior modification; parent training; community psychology; child abuse and neglect; family therapy; and cultural history. His most recent research was on the use of corporal punishment in child rearing, and he has been a long-time opponent of corporal punishment. He is editor, co-author, or author of fifteen books, 86 journal articles and presentations at professional meetings, and a dozen op-ed newspaper columns. Dr. Graziano has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Psychological Association, People, Inc., a Western New York agency serving persons with developmental disabilities, and the editorial board of the journal, Behavior Modification. When not playing with his grandchildren, Graziano passionately pursues cooking, tennis, carpentry, masonry, drawing cartoons, and traveling Europe with Sheila, his wife of 50 years.

 

Michael Raulin is a clinical associate professor at the State University of New York, Buffalo, where he has been a faculty member since 1978. He received his BS and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At Buffalo, he was the director of the Psychological Services Center--the research and training clinic for the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology--and also headed the Ph.D. clinical psychology program for several years. He founded and directed the department’s Anxiety Disorders Clinic and maintained a small private practice for 20 years.     Dr. Raulin’s research has always focused on psychopathology, with most of his work on risk factors in schizophrenia. He has published 30 articles or chapters and is author of an abnormal psychology text. He served on the editorial board of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology and the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and reviewed papers for nearly 20 different journals and grant applications for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He has been active in psychological affairs, locally, regionally, and nationally. He was president of the Psychological Association of Western New York, chaired the program committees for the Society for Research in Psychopathology and the Eastern Psychological Association, and was president of the National Association of Directors of Psychology Training Clinics and secretary of Society for Research in Psychopathology. He has an excellent reputation for his teaching, with evaluations that consistently place him among the top instructors at the university. He has won awards for teaching and public service and is listed in Who’s Who in Among Rising Young Americans, Who’s Who Among Health Service Professionals, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in Medicine and Health Care.

Good baseline book for those preparing for a dissertation

As a Ph.D. student that is about to start my dissertation I found this book extremely helpful in wading through the various research and analysis methods. Filled with examples (although principally focused on Psychology), the book has helped me plan my dissertation. A great reference book and in my opinion a must have for those who are about to start their dissertation.

Nevertheless, the book went on to become a cult hit, selling more than 400,000 copies before going out of print. The novel is now being reissued to coincide with the upcoming publication of Cohen's Stranger Music. World of Beauty

Songwriter/singer/poet/novelist Leonard Cohen is a writer who, through the use of a few words alone, can send a thousand different emotions and images through your head. His writing is powerful and touching, though often too poetic. Beautiful Losers is, in fact, a poem disguised as a novel. It is a postmodernistic work of Canadian fiction that, although beautiful, refuses to make sense.
The story's nameless narrator is scarred by the death of his wife, Edith, and of his best friend, F. As the three were part of a very strange romantic triangle, the posthumous revelations the narrator comes to during the course of the story are highly revealing and often shocking. As he mourns his wife, he cannot hide the fact that he was also in love with F. and his strange view on life.
A historian in disguise, the narrator is also doing research on an Native saint named Catherine, who's story is an echo of the things the narrator has went through and is going through. As these four chracters entertwine, and as more and more painful secrets are revealed, we are forced into a chaotic world where sense does not exist, where order and sanity are always at stake.
A highly poetic effort, Beautiful Losers ins't a book that should be read quickly. Just like the prose, the reader should take his time while reading it. It's too easy to miss the great irony and humour behind all the darkness and sadness of the prose. Cohen created a world where surrealism, sexuality and violence are part of the ordinary, where order seems to fail with a shocking consistancy and where disorder seems to rule.

Cohen the Novelist

Having avoided Leonard Cohen for so long, lumping him with the "classic rock" I found annoying, I'm now in the midst of a serious Leonard Cohen Obsession by way of a Jeff Buckley cover and then this massively brilliant, inspired and dense, genuis, pornographic, and simply awesome novel. The language in this book is so alive, you would think it would grow flesh on the page. Any passage rivals Henry Miller, James Joyce, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you're looking for a plot-driven page turner, go elsewhere. This is the stuff of serious linguistic revelry, for people who like to read books that make you jealous that he wrote it, and you didn't.

Like: Days without work. Why did that list depress me? I should never have made the list. I've done something bad to your belly, Edith. I tried to use it. I tried to use your belly against the Plague. I tried to be a man in a padded locker room telling a beautiful smutty story to eternity. I tried to be an emcee in a tuxedo arousing a lodge of honeymooners, my bed full of golf windows. I forgot that I was desperate. I forgot that I began this research in desperation. My briefcase fooled me. My tidy notes led me astray. I thought I was doing a job.

Or: Oh God, Your Morning Is Perfect. People Are Alive In Your World. I Can Hear The Little Children In The Elevator. The Airplane Is Flying Through The Original Blue. Mouths Are Eating Breakfast. The Radio Is Filled With Electricity. The Trees Are Excellent.

[It goes on for two pages like this, beautiful, perfect.]

So, I would have to say that I give this an effusive six out of five stars.

And, I should add, Leonard Cohen is NOT dead! He is a Zen monk. Where are the novels that he was supposed to write for us? He was cheated out of his retirement fund by an ex-wife/manager. You should buy this book so he can retire comfortably, as he should, one of the great genuises of the English language that has been overshadowed by the filthy stupidity of the rock industry of America.

A Gateway to Dreams and Nightmares....

I have seen images in this book I will never, ever forget. This book takes you places you never knew a mind could take you. Some words of Warning, If you are looking for the style Cohen uses while writing his songs, you will not find it here in this book. What you will find is the nightmarish journey of one woman into sainthood, and three people pushing sanity to it's limit. I have to say this is one of the best novels I have ever read. You have to give it at least 50 pages before you start figuring out what's going on. But once the book takes off there's no going back your in for a ride.

Hard to read.

The phrasebook itself is good but the print is too small. Even with reading glasses I cannot read it especially the Malay phonetic pronunciations and words. I purchased the Collins Malay Kindle version instead so that I can read it on my laptop.
