Maritime historian Bawlf skillfully uncovers new information regarding Drake's circumnavigation of the globe, which began, amidst political and religious upheaval in Europe, in 1577. Until now, Drake's secret voyage-the exploration of the Pacific Northwest in hopes of finding the fabled Northwest Passage to eastern trade routes, and to establish a British colony in the New World-was hidden under a "cloak of secrecy" due to Drake's complicated relationship with Queen Elizabeth and England's precarious political situation with Spain. With braided historical, nautical, geographical and imagined narrative elements, Drake's voyage unfolds slowly at first, and at times lags under the weight of all Bawlf attempts to include. But once underway, it becomes an increasingly compelling tale, as Drake earns his reputation as "one of the greatest mariners that sail[ed] the seas, both as a navigator and as a commander," feared by his enemies for the "alarming scope of his [pirating] success." The account is thoroughly researched and carefully plotted, but Bawlf's true accomplishment is his humanization of historical icon Drake, a demanding, unyielding captain and ruthless sacker of Spanish ships and colonies, while at the same time a man who was deeply religious, who treated his captives with courtesy and was eager to establish strong bonds with the indigenous people he encountered along his journey. In the end, what resonates most is Drake's disappointment at being denied public ownership of his most important discoveries. To solve a mystery about Drake's circumnavigation of the globe, Bawlf narrates the sea dog's voyage and plumbs maps and chronicles published in its immediate wake. Although Drake's trashing of Spanish galleons and towns in America was a lucrative boon and sensational propaganda for Elizabeth I in her sinuous maneuverings against Philip II, Drake's precise route through the Pacific was purposely obfuscated. The concealment annoyed cartographers such as Mercator, whose frustration Bawlf quotes, but energizes the author's scrutiny of maps. Reproduced profusely in this work, the charts show islets off the northwest coast of North America. Drake also vaguely recorded geographic landmarks in the region (e.g., "frozen land"). Bawlf melds these details into a conjecture that Drake poked the Golden Hinde around Vancouver Island and its labyrinthine waters. Mavens of maritime history will tingle at this kind of sleuthing, and they'll rollick as well in Bawlf's fluid retelling of Drake's drama-filled life at sea and court. Perhaps the Greatest Voyage in the History of Global Exploration - Hidden for over 400 years!

This incredibly well researched book rocked my perception of Pacific Northwest discovery. I have been an avid reader of maritime history, particularly as it relates to the voyages of Captains Cook and Vancouver in the Pacific. Imagine my shock at discovering that their voyages pales in comparison to the “Secret Voyage of Sir Francis Drake” in 1577 – 1580.

The bombshell in this book was an amazing assembly of diverse hints and clues that place the reader on the Golden Hind as Drake explored the north coast of North America, including the Inside Passage to Alaska. All his discoveries above latitude 48 were suppressed, upon pain of death, by Queen Elizabeth I. Now, over 400 years after the voyage, Samuel Bawlf, through intense research, has properly brought this voyage to light as one of the greatest voyages in the history of global exploration.

It was not until 200 years after Drake’s incredible voyage that the world was given a clear view of Pacific Northwest geography. This events described in this book will keep you spellbound; chills of excitement will course through your veins at the events revealed here. The techniques used to determine longitude on the Oregon Coast are worth the read all by themselves.

This is a “must read” for any student of Pacific Northwest maritime history. A background of reading 16th century history will be a huge help here (especially with regard to Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I).

An absorbing historical account, except for some slow spots

During the lives of Sir Francis Drake and Queen Elizabeth, England and Spain became bitter rivals and, much of the time, lethal enemies. So when Drake returned from his circumnavigation of the Earth, the English Crown kept some important information about his voyage secret. Drake's discoveries along the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia might have revealed to Spain the Northwest Passage. And of course the English were not forthright about Drake's profitable raids.

Some of the pages are quickly turned, particularly those covering Drake's raids. Other parts are interesting too. I was pleased with Drake's encounters with natives, even the peaceful ones, and though they were not relevant to the book's title, I welcomed passages describing other explorers. I subtract a star in my rating because too many pages deal with the evolution of old maps. Those pages were slow, and one or two paragraphs would have sufficed. Geographical description of northwest America--bays, straits, passages, and whatnot--also became slow.

Bawlf lends verisimilitude to his account by presenting many quotations from the era. He also makes many footnotes, and he includes a bibliography and an index. His narration is highlighted by historical maps and drawings.

Sir Francis Drake is surrounded by many secrets and much inaccurate information, and down to the present day he is controversial. Which, in addition to history being somewhat artful and NOT exact, is reason enough for readers to approach this book as something less than holy gospel. Nevertheless, it is a good read.

I enjoyed getting to know 'El Draco' and am amazed by all that I didn't know about his exploits and adventures...and all I didn't know of the extent of Spanish plunder in the Americans. I am left with the impression that, after having engaged in the slave trade somewhat, Sir Francis might have evolved into one of our earliest civil rights supporters. That's a bit of a stretch, I'm sure, but at least the beginning of a more humanist attitude towards the people who found themselves the unfortunate targets of the slave trade.

Some good information, but not very useful for established teachers.

I really think this would be best for people just starting out, like a recent college graduate, to get the basics on tutoring. I am pretty specialized (high school biology, chemistry, physics and ACT science prep), have a website already and have a teaching job already.

I definitely think that some ideas got me to think about good marketing strategies, and for that, it was worth the price on kindle.

Highly Recommended for all future test-takers

Compared to many other CS review books available today, this book is unique in many ways: it is an easy read, no fluffiness, not too lengthy, you can highlight and add your own personal notes as needed, and most importantly, the book is rich enough in information necessary for the exam. I also appreciate the fact that it is well-organized into sections (system by system) which proves helpful in taking focused history and physical exam with confidence.

The sections in the book also have matching videos online (paid subscription required) to follow alongside (future CS takers who need extra boost may find them helpful as well; the author also coaches test takers one-on-one and monitors their progress). The handbook also shares some tips on patient note (PN) taking/writing, counseling, diagnostic work up, sample PNs, etc etc. So far, I enjoy reading the book and I will update my review when the test is completed with its final outcome. And I'm quite optimistic with the way my preparation is going. Much thanks to the author.

All I can say for now is that I Highly recommend this book.

Fantastic study resource for the USMLE Step 2 CS!

I wish I had read your book earlier; I bought the Kindle version about 3 days before my exam. (I had seen Dr. June's very helpful videos on Youtube, and it compelled me to try out the manual).
The way this handbook is laid out is very helpful in the study process; neither the First Aid or Uworld had lay outs like this!
I also joined Dr. June's online free webinar in which she explained the process of studying for this exam and how to excel.
Buy this handbook early on in your studying time; it will greatly help you-- there are specific explanations to WHY you have to do each physical exam maneuver, ask specific questions in order to help you rule in/out differentials in your mind. There are great examples and explanations in writing out the Patient Note. The manual gave me a lot of reassurance in my knowledge; it was a perfect wrap-up of other study materials all in one organized place :) Keep practicing & good luck to you all!

A must to pass on the First Attempt...

The best CS review book out there. Don't waste your time with anything else. If you want to pass the exam this book along with online course and personal coaching by the author is a must. Do it once do it right with Target USMLE. This book goes hand in hand with the online course. The beauty of the book is short clear and concise, it's only 73 pages. So you can review and go through it many times before your exam. If you do the course with the personal coaching all you need is about 2-3 weeks prep. Target USMLE is a must all Medical grads for the exam specially the IMG's. The beauty of the book is Dr. June puts it very clear pattern in a step by step pattern. It's like reading a recipe book, actually the online course the book and personal coaching all put together is recipe for success. If you want to pass this exam on the first attempt get this book asap. I don't what I would have done without this book, online course and personal coaching. Target USMLE was the key to my success.

About the Author
Pastor Happy Caldwell is the founder and Pastor of Agape Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is also the founder and president of VTN (Victory Television Network) with a four state outreach. In 1979 the Lord spoke to him to build a spiritual production center to deliver the Gospel throughout the city, state, nation, and world. Today, Pastor Caldwell travels worldwide preaching the Word of God with a simplicity that brings a revelation of the character of God to those who hear. He is also a successful author, and together with his wife, Jeanne, has recorded several Gospel music albums. Pastor Caldwell has an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University and is a recipient of the Peter J. Daniel's Achievement Award.

About the Author

Should cement O'Brien's name as a true master of the genre.

I'll be the first to admit that I was a little bit worried about O'Brien's newest book. It starts out exactly like the rest of his novels, contains many of the same plot elements and has the same pacing and twists and turns. I understand that novelists make a name for themselves with similar styles and stories, however, they run the risk of becoming formulaic and boring...exactly like James Patterson or Clive Cussler.

So I think it's right to fear that O'Brien could have been going down the same path with No One Needs to Know. Like I said (and have said in all my previous reviews of his novels), this one seems to start on the same, familiar ground we have seen before. Same single mother trying to escape a difficult past, same weird murders that end up grabbing said single mother, a cute guy that also gets wrapped up into the fray, and of course, the plot twists and red herrings that abound everywhere. It's all familiar territory readers have seen before.

However, this one seems just a little bit more unique than his last. Some people have complained there's a lack of the supernatural, spooky edge that was present in past novels, and yes, that doesn't seem to be as prevalent, but I actually enjoyed it this way. Kind of like how Stephen King has started to shy away from horror, O'Brien is adding in more thriller elements, more realistic moments that make the book that much more suspenseful and hard to put down.

I also think the backstory and interwoven plots works the best out of any of O'Brien's previous efforts. Sure, it's a bit of a rip-off of the Manson murders from the 1960's, but it works here, as does the main character's back story and the side plot involving the stalking situation. (Don't worry, I'm not giving anything away by writing that). O'Brien also does a great job of making the tension tight and keeping the reader guessing, up until the very last few pages. Even I kept going back and forth between who the good guys and bad guys were; I was even surprised at the conclusion...a very difficult feat for any mystery author to do.

The cover may be a little bit on the lackluster side, but why some people would say this is O'Brien's weakest offering to date is lost on me (these complainers obviously havn't read Final Breath) It's true, I wouldn't say this is O'Brien's best work (that'll probably always belong to Tell Me You're Sorry as it was my very first O'Brien novel), but it's still wildly entertaining and kept me glued to the pages far into the night. I think that alone is worth 5 stars. If this book doesn't cement O'Brien's name in the hall of great mystery writers, I honestly don't know what would.

Too Much Was Going On For One Book

I was was given an ARC of No One Need To Know from NetGalley for an honest review and this is my review.
For me this book was only okay. There was way too much going on and I felt like I was lost most of the time. I really wish the author would have stuck with one strong storyline instead of putting two stories together that would have been pretty strong books on their own. Half the time I was not sure what was going on and I just wanted to give up.
Maybe it is the authors style and I am just not use to it because I have never read anything from him before so I did stick with the book and it did get a bit better towards the end when everything came together and that is why I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and giving the book three out of five stars. Maybe I just need to get use to this style of writing.

Too much information

Laurie Trotter got involved with the wrong man while her husband was defending the country. He is convinced he is the father of her son despite the proof. She is being stalked and decides to relocate to get away from his brother. She lands a job with Cheryl on a food truck while a film is being produced. People that speak to Cheryl are now dying and Laurie begins to wonder if she and her son are safe. Laurie starts digging trying to find out exactly what is going on with all the secrets and information about Cheryl. This book was okay. The plot was good but there was a lot of information that we could of done without to make it shorter. I felt like book was just filled with a lot of pointless run ons. While reading this I felt like we just weren't getting any closer to answers. It did finally answer everything but I'm still questioning why I finished this book. I still may read another book by this author in hopes that it will be better.
