Felicia's Second Life Volume 1: I don't want to be violent, yet it's the only way, by Ai Shiina

Good day, everyone!

My name is Felicia Belphere Metrune. I am the only daughter of Baron Alphonse Lartes Metrune. I am 7 years old. I haven’t always been Baron Metrune’s daughter, though.

I was originally a 29 year old man who lived in Cornwall. One day I was hit by a truck and as a result, I was reincarnated into what at first seemed to be medieval Europe.

But what’s this? We are a noble family, but why is our house so run down? Why are the fields looking so lifeless? Why does our army consist of one person? Why do we have so much land but it’s all barren?

Why? Why? Why?

Fun, Funny and My Kind of Book
By Amazon Customer
This isn't going to be for everyone. There's a lot of 'civ building' such as improving farming, industry etc etc. I loved this and thought it was done really well with just the right balance of enough detail but not too much. Is the level of ability of the main character to improve/develop things too high? That's debatable but if it's fun who cares?! If you only enjoy action etc though the early chapters will be hard to get through and the book as a whole may not be for you.

I loved the main character. He/she was certainly not a saint but wasn't a villain either, even if she did have the muhahaha laugh of one! She was so fun, determined and honest with herself that I couldn't help loving her. It also helps that the artwork of her on the cover is also great. The use of manga/anime/light novel concepts really fit well into this story. I found myself laughing, excited, worried, happy, laughing, laughing and filled with many more emotions as I read this book. If that doesn't make a book good I don't know what does. Even if not everyone will like it to me this book is worth every star I have given it and would get more if I could.

Some people will also be offended by the age of the characters or the girl x girl romantic interest. If you've read the description though you should have a good idea what to expect and this isn't erotica even if two girls do for example kiss. It isn't a children's book either though. Just as in the equivalent time frame that this story references, the story isn't set in a time of feminism or equality, but why should authors shy away from the fact that women and children (and men) are sometimes treated despicably and that this was even worse in the past? I am also glad that the author didn't give in to the temptation to give every female character (including children) huge breasts as some manga/anime does. Personally I think the author should be applauded for not censoring her own work and for writing such a great story. I look forward to more! Soon please!

Could have been great but was very flawed
By Amazon Customer
I really like the core of this book. The general plot and many aspects of the characters are engaging. There were hints of some interesting world building. I really wanted to like it but I couldn't.

There is a fair bit of sexually explicit content in relation to children in this book. A 10 year old girl is extremely explicit about what she wants to do to another 10 year old for pages. An 11 year old is groped, kissed, and sits on the laps of old men because it is fun? It is a consistent theme. I found it creepy but maybe those who are into loli may not have an issue with it.

If you dislike misogyny, there will be parts of this book that are hard to read. Some of the book is excellent in this regard (women have places of importance and are actually quite scary warriors) and in other regards it is horrible (women are treated as sex objects regularly and enjoy being sexually harassed because obviously it is fun when that happens!)

There are a number of issues with this book that I wish an editor had fixed. There is a LOT of repetition between chapters. The same event will be covered at least twice in many cases. This gets better as the book goes on but it is really bad in the first half of the book as the author insists on reintroducing what happened in the last chapter.

The time frame for events is off and the knowledge base of the main character is much too high. Apparently it only takes a few weeks to build four docks and a shipyard. A man with nothing more than a highschool understanding of chemistry can create both gunpowder and percussion caps for bullets. He also apparently is a master shipwright able to build massive ships in no time because he build a rowboat once with his father. Eric Flint's Grantville series does a great job of pointing out many of the problems with the massive leaps the main character seems to make effortlessly.

The book is also short. I read it in about 4 hours. For the price, I was expecting more content.

I don't think I will be reading more of this series but I am interested in reading more from this author. The core of the story and the characters was really promising.

Engaging but suspend your critical bone
By frosty
I agree with some of the criticism that there is a lot of hard to swallow events in this book, 10 to 11 yr old girls doing a lot of sexual things, unbelievable timeline for building things, but it is a engaging story, and funny. Worth the money and time.

A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America, by Ronald Takaki

Upon its first publication, A Different Mirror was hailed by critics and academics everywhere as a dramatic new retelling of our nation's past. Beginning with the colonization of the New World, it recounted the history of America in the voice of the non-Anglo peoples of the United States--Native Americans, African Americans, Jews, Irish Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and others--groups who helped create this country's rich mosaic culture.

Now, Ronald Takaki has revised his landmark work and made it even more relevant and important. Among the new additions to the book are:

--The role of black soldiers in preserving the Union
--The history of Chinese Americans from 1900-1941
--An investigation into the hot-button issue of "illegal" immigrants from Mexico
--A look at the sudden visibility of Muslim refugees from Afghanistan.

This new edition of A Different Mirror is a remarkable achievement that grapples with the raw truth of American history and examines the ultimate question of what it means to be an American.

From Publishers Weekly
In a vibrantly rich, moving multicultural tapestry, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore ) provides a fresh slant on American society by tracing the interwoven histories of Native Americans, Africans, Chinese, Japanese, Chicanos, Irish and Jewish immigrants. We see how 17th-century white planters, anxious to weaken an armed, politicized, white proletariat, enslaved an unarmed black workforce, with explosive consequences. We follow Chicano struggles as an integral part of America's westward expansion and learn how Jewish-black solidarity extends back to John Brown's uprising in 1856 against slavery in Kansas, an insurrection in which Jews participated. We see how oppression of the Irish (the first people the English called "savages") foreshadowed the subjugation of Native Americans. Interweaving voices from all points on the ethnic rainbow, Takaki, ethnic studies professor at UC Berkeley, has produced a brilliant revisionist history of America that is likely to become a classic of multicultural studies. From School Library Journal
YA-Takaki traces the economic and political history of Indians, African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America, with considerable attention given to instances and consequences of racism. The narrative is laced with short quotations, cameos of personal experiences, and excerpts from folk music and literature. Well-known occurrences, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the Trail of Tears, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Japanese internment are included. Students may be surprised by some of the revelations, but will recognize a constant thread of rampant racism. The author concludes with a summary of today's changing economic climate and offers Rodney King's challenge to all of us to try to get along. Students will find this overview to be an accessible, cogent jumping-off place for American history and political science assignments, plus a guide to the myriad other sources identified in the notes.

From Library Journal
In his new work, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore , LJ 7/89; Iron Cages , LJ 3/1/80) calls for "a more inclusive and accurate history of all the peoples of America." But the book is limited to accounts of Native Americans, Africans, Irish, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese, and Eastern European Jews, prefaced with a discussion of English settlers in the 17th century. Even within these limits, this book is not the "story of multidimensional ethnic interaction" that the author desires. Beyond victimization, few common themes emerge. Still, the book is useful, notwithstanding the author's sometimes questionable generalizations, oversimplifications, and fuzzy chronology. Not even seasoned historians will be knowledgeable about all the groups included. Takaki fails to show us how to reunite American history, but he provides in one volume a very readable version of some lesser-known parts. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 2/15/93.

Insightful and revealing descriptive studies of the history of multicultural people in America
By G. Ryan
I Read Ronald Takaki A Different Mirror for a graduate class in social work. This is an excellent historical studies of many of the multicultural in American that covers slavery, Native American removal from their land to the reservations and history, Irish immigrants as the lower white class, occupation of Mexico, Asians immigration to California and workforce, migrant workers, the story of the sweat shops and garment workers, the Chicano border crossing, Urban blacks, and Nazisms. The book is very descriptive of the struggles and hardships, and people who arrived in America with a dream, and the Native American loosing their way of life and home land This book is very insightful book and one worth keeping.

By Koala
Such an amazing and excellent book. I'm so happy to read a history book from a non-European perspective. It gives so much detail and to the contributions of minorities in America. I feel like more people should be reading this book because people of all nationalities and backgrounds have contributed something great to the creation of America.

The hardback is the old version while the paperback is the newer edition
By Holly
While I enjoyed the book greatly, beware of what format you are buying! This hardback version is an older version of the book and I needed the newest edition which is the paperback copy. That is why the hardback version is cheaper. The book is a great read, but I wish it was more clear indicating what version it was.

Melissa might have been raised in a protected environment, but she certainly goes wild at her first frat party. I loved the way she internally questioned everything. "Is this debauchery?" and "I really need google debauchery and find out what it means." You know she learned the meaning before the story was over.

Amazing. Cindy never fails to deliver, and this story is no exception. I loved Melissa's descent from good girl to party girl in this book. Melissa lost her innocence in grand fashion. And since it was in KU, it was free to read! Loves it!

The Walking Dead Vol 24: Life and Death, but Kirkman and Adlard
By C. Dennis Moore
Holy crap! Now THAT’S how you do a cliffhanger.

With nearly 150 issues under his belt, I can’t believe how on top of his game writer Robert Kirkman still is. When you consider the novels, the hit TV series, not to mention the new spin-off, he’s still got the onions to write the story contained in THE WALKING DEAD Vol. 24: Life and Death.

We remember from the last volume that Carl has gone off to find Lydia, daughter of Alpha, the leader of the Whisperers, the nomadic tribe of survivors who live among the dead in the wild.

Meanwhile, Maggie has survived an attempt on her life by Gregory, the former leader of the Hilltop community.

When this volume starts, spanning issues 139-144 of the monthly series, Carl has been captured by the Whisperers, while Rick is away on trade business for the local communities. Back at Alexandria, people are getting ready for a town fair and back at the Hilltop, Maggie is trying to decide what to do with Gregory, even though she knows, in her heart, there’s only one thing TO do. She knows Rick has kept Negan alive all these years, locked up in jail, to prove that there is still some hope for humanity. But Gregory is a different breed and there are still people who can be swayed by him, and that’s something she can’t allow. So he’s going to have to be executed.

And speaking of Negan, when one of the people in charge of him doesn’t lock his cell door properly while Rick is away … let’s just say the outcome to that was the LAST thing I expected.

But Rick’s got more on his mind when Maggie tells him Carl is missing, and where he’s gone. Rick does what any father would do, he goes after his son, even into enemy territory.

But the Whisperers are like no enemy they’ve faced yet. And when Alpha confronts Rick with what they’re capable of, he knows that being let go is truly a mercy. But that’s not the worst of it. Alpha has set up a border dividing the communities’ territory from the Whisperers’, and what Rick finds there is one of the biggest Cliffhangers Kirkman has dreamed up yet. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

It’s a rarity to find one creator working so consistently on a single comic project for so long, and still being this strong so far into it. I don’t know how Kirkman manages it, but good God this was a great book.

He manages to strike a perfect balance between showing the survivors getting back to some semblance of a life, but never letting us or them forget what’s just outside their gates. And as usual in this series, the truest threats don’t come from the reanimated dead shambling about mindlessly eating any living thing they can get their hands on. They’re still a threat, of course, but if Negan and his crew weren’t enough, the Whisperers show us there is true evil in the world.

Charlie Adlard, still hard at in the art department. The black and white still makes it difficult at times to tell some characters apart, but I think Kirkman does what he can to help us out in that area through dialogue. And when Adlard is given a dramatic splash page to awe us with, he always delivers big. So what if there were a few panels here and there that looked either rushed, amateurish, or rushed by an amateur? Overall, Adlard is right next to Kirkman, still delivering month in and month out, over a decade in.

When Kirkman jumped ahead in time a few volumes ago, I thought it might be a bad sign for the series, but everything so far has only proved me wrong and instead shown that Kirkman has some big ideas in mind for where this book is headed. For me, if Volume 24 is any indication, it’s only going to keep getting better and better. And, let’s face it, it was already pretty damned good to start with!

I thought the Whisperers might be kind of boring, but I was WRRRRONGG!
By Z
Originally I didn't think they'd be able to make much of the Whisperers storyline, and thought they'd made a mistake by having everything become so civilized. Good stories thrive on conflict, and while a more peaceful and organized world would be great for Rick and his people, it wouldn't make for a very intriguing story. So, I thought the past few post-Negan volumes had been spinning their wheels a bit.

Yeah... that was a set-up. In this one you find out that the Whisperers are the zombie-apocalypse version of a superpower, and they've got the zombie-apocalypse version of an A-bomb, and I don't see how Rick's crew is going to be able to handle this "arms race." And there's a devastating masterstroke move that proves Kirkman isn't afraid to cash in a lot of chips all at once. Events you'd think he'd parcel out to keep the story running all get thrown in your face at once, and it's hardcore, fearless writing. But, I've got confidence that it was the right move. I doubted Kirkman's wisdom at the beginning of the Whisperers storyline and he proved me wrong, so, I'm not second-guessing him anymore!

If you've been following the series, and maybe were drifting away from it because things had gotten a little too easy-going... it's time to come back. This will hook you all over again.

Now I can't wait for volume 25...

Another volume of outstanding stories. Each volume is full of suspense and serious character development. I'd highly recommend these books to fans of the TV series because there are many differences. With these books, fans can get their fix with different stories for the characters they know. It's a great way to pass the time in between seasons.

From Publishers Weekly
Psychotherapist Thomas's warm-hearted "course" for the lovelorn focuses on internal change rather than a quest for "the One," because, she says, "There is a huge chasm between wanting to find your ideal partner and being truly available... when he or she appears." Each of the seven weeks centers on a theme, including preparing to let love into one's life, letting go of childhood wounds and loving oneself. Thomas reinforces her lessons with standard self-help techniques, particularly meditation and journaling. Her feel-good-about-yourself message gets much of its thrust from a Christian perspective, though a healthy dose of Buddhism and Eastern religious traditions spices things up. Atheists should be able to navigate the course as effectively as believers, she says, though her many references to God's role in realizing one's romantic goals may disprove this. But Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way (to which this bears a resemblance in format) helped countless struggling artists, and this volume may do the same for the lonely. Certainly meditation, discipline and self-acceptance are noble pursuits whether or not "the One" comes knocking, and Thomas's belief that love will find you once you find love is so unswerving that it's almost impossible not to be convinced.

I still can't get over that it worked... (from a skeptic)
By rah
People kept recommending "Calling in the One" to me and I kept rolling my eyes. It was way too woo-woo for my liking. But after being single for almost five years, I decided, "what the heck" especially since meeting someone felt more and more unlikely.

I followed the entire program--all the exercises, all the journaling, all the silly projects. I honestly believe part of the magic of this book comes from the ability to suspend your beliefs and skepticism and try things that you'd normally flat-out reject as too outlandish or stupid to try.

The beauty of this book is while it purports to be about bringing the right person to you, the author really has you calling in yourself. That work -- at least for me -- started to shift things in my life. It became clear that I was telling people I was fine on my own, while privately scanning my surroundings hoping to find a mate.

Long story short, I finished the program and, as per the last assignment, wrote a list of all the qualities I was looking for in a partner. Seven weeks earlier my list would have been very different, but because I had done so much work on myself, I could see that I was more open to a different kind of love. I put the list aside and went about my life.

The author spends a lot of time talking about how our words are a creative force. Once we say something out loud the universe shifts and bends to help make it happen. To me this was a cute nice idea, but kind of nutty. But several months later, I finally admitted to a friend that I was lonely, really truly lonely, and that I really wanted someone in my life. For me this was huge. I never let on that this was the case -- even if people suspected as much -- I always kept up the facade that I was perfectly fine on my own.

Wouldn't you know it, the next day I met my future husband. It's one of those things that is just too crazy to believe, and it took me a while to put two and two together. After dating for several months, I remembered the list I had made and pulled it out to see what it said. He met every single quality I wrote down, and and as the author reminded us, he looked nothing like I imagined.

So there you go. Two years later we're getting married, and I've never in a happier or healthier relationship. Most people I recommend this book to can't get past the silly exercises, but I think if you make it through with an open mind you'll be rewarded. I'm grateful for this book and grateful the author wrote it. Yes it's a big dose of woo-woo, but what's the harm in suspending your beliefs for seven weeks? I'm happy I did.

The words are full of warmth
By T. Wu
I have gone through the book once and did the exercises but I am still not married and have not a person in mind I want to marry, in fact I don't even feel like dating anymore at this point, I have not gone out on dates for many months now, am just focused on how to improve myself and absorbing the love that is already around me ... but the point of the book and the exercises, after doing them, it really helped me grow into a newer improved version of myself, I feel now that I have improved I have a better chance at finding, building, and maintaining a relationship, whenever my chance comes. After a few months of reading and doing all of the exercises, I have decided to reread the book and redo all the exercises again... just because how much it helped the first time around. For me, there are still value that I could cultivate from the book on 2nd or even a 3rd read. The only thing I didn't like is the title of the book, its so darn cheesy. Anyone who catches me reading this would presume I am a desperate person.... but the author isn't one of those scam dating coach, I felt warmth in her words, she genuinely wants to share, cares, and wants to help others. This doesn't feel like yet another dating service that is trying to make money out of lonely singletons. The title of the book make it seem like a scam, but the content of the book is amazing. It helped me so much.

Katherine, if you see this review, thank you for writing this book :)

Worked for Me!
By Mystique69
I personally think this book should be required reading for everyone before they start into relationships. I started this book after I found out my fiancé of several years was cheating on me with a married co-worker. I kicked him out promptly, a few months before we were to get married. And though thoroughly devastated, I had a need to figure out why I kept choosing the same types of loser guys. I was tired of being "broken".

I think the readers that are complaining about the author "settling" have totally missed the point of the book. I am not a "journaler" or a scrapbook person, so I didn't do the exercises. I did however, spend a lot of time thinking about her questions and mentally exploring examples she gave. There were a couple of things I did do - make a list of traits I was looking for in a mate was one of them. This book is valuable in that it makes you think about your choices. She gave a lot of good examples from her own life, of things I've personally done. It was helpful to get an outside perspective, without being put down, and to realize that others have done really stupid things too. It helped me come to terms with a lot of whys -- why things failed, why a certain person was not the "one", etc. and why I have perpetually been seeking the same type of guy.

I am happy to say I found "the one", in not quite 7 weeks, but close. He is nothing like I've ever dated before, he met every criteria on my list and so much more. We are engaged to be married in December. I never knew a relationship could be so good. This book helped immensely in that I was able to move past my previous relationship, turn away guys that were not right for me without guilt, and find a man that treats me the way I always wanted to be treated. I feel incredibly blessed, lucky, and very loved. This book was instrumental in helping me get to this point. It was all stuff I inherently knew, but until it was laid out in front of me, in cold, hard factual form, it really didn't sink in.

I would say if you are having a hard time in relationships and truly are wanting something different and better, then this book can be helpful. But the key, as to anything, is the desire to truly change. If you aren't willing to really put in the effort and make the changes to your behavior then it is pointless. But if you are willing to keep an open mind and work to better yourself, I think this book is a great place to start.

Alvar Aalto: Second Nature, by Jochen Eisenbrand, Pedro Gadanho, Dörte Kuhlmann, Peter MacKeith, Mina Marefat, Marco Michelis, &Aacut

Described by the architectural critic Sigfried Giedion as the “Magus of the North,” Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is the best-known Finnish architect of his generation and a leading proponent of a more human modernism. His buildings such as the Paimio Sanatorium (1933), the legendary Villa Mairea (1939) and the church of the Three Crosses in Vuoksenniska (1958), embody a masterful interplay of organic volumes, forms and materials. From door handles and lighting fixtures to built-in furniture, Aalto frequently designed complete interiors down to the smallest detail. With his plywood chairs, the master builder additionally became one of the most significant designers of the twentieth century. His Savoy Vase represents the quintessential qualities of Finnish and organic design. This richly illustrated book is the first in many years to offer a comprehensive and current overview of Aalto’s oeuvre as an architect, designer and urban planner. Ten authors, including the renowned architectural historians Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Akos Moravanszky, and MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho, address central aspects of Aalto’s work. Particular attention is paid to Aalto’s dialogue with important artists of his day, including Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger, as well as his interest in film, cinema and photography, whose influences on his work are examined here for the first time. The catalogue section presents numerous never-before-seen original drawings and architectural models from the archive of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. This perspective on Aalto is complemented with photographs by Armin Linke, who documented a number of Aalto’s buildings anew especially for this publication. As these images demonstrate, Aalto’s work is as current and inspiring today as it was at the time of its creation.

A beautiful to hold
By CJM
A beautiful to hold, beautiful to look at, and beautiful to read monograph on Aalto. If you are looking for a slick large-format book full of detailed photos I might look elsewhere, but the archival material, artful new photos, and especially the fascinating essays make for a wonderful book.

More Boring To Read Than Textbook
By Sonntag
This was my most anticipated book to buy for 2014 after witness the failed attempt by Robert McCarter earlier that year, and my stubborn refusal to pay $300 dollars for 3 overpriced black and white Xerox copies by Birkhäuser. Unfortunately my principle and patience didn't payoff that year, and my dream of hoping to buy a better Aalto book than Richard Weston's version was shattered like the snow globe that I accidentally dropped at Strand Bookstore.
The book was small in page format with about 75% text and we are talking about a 648-page volume. It has more text per image than a Kenneth Frampton's architectural theory book. The rest are drawings and normal at best photographs. Don't be fooled by the four semi-decent images they show on Amazon because that's probably the best images throughout the whole book.
I was going to put the book back on the shelf and walk away without saying anything, but I soon realize that's ethically wrong because some poor student or intern might spend $60 of their hard earn money on it and expect lots of drawings and beautiful photographs than an overpriced furniture brand on the cover. So, I decided to share my humble personal opinion. And of course, I do not speak for those who enjoys reading phone book.
