Back in 1970 it was the ORIGINAL — the first book about studying to offer readers the friendly, tutorial style (incorporating 'interactive' activities with feedback) that has since become such a feature of Open University teaching materials and has been adopted by numerous other authors of books for students.

Since 1988, however, Professor Rowntree was too busy pioneering elearning courses at the Open University to have time to update his book. Consequently it soon seemed to him to be not relevant enough to the very courses he was developing, so he let it go out of print for the last ten years. Now, in his retirement, and many years richer in experience of student learning, he has at last found time to rewrite the book into the 21st century of learning.

LEARN HOW TO STUDY is not a collection of handy hints and quick fixes. Of course, it includes chapters on the critical reading of texts (in print and on screen), making notes, learning from seminars, lectures and new media, writing essays, tackling exams successfully, and so on — but presented in a way that encourages students to become reflective and exploratory about their approaches to learning and choose for themselves which ways of studying best meet their purposes. Professor Rowntree suggests to students that the three things they need to do to succeed are as follows:
•to understand what they want out of learning and what other people (especially tutors) expect of them.
•to develop approaches that will enable them to acquire the kind of learning that will satisfy their tutors while also getting what they themselves want from the process.
•to convincingly demonstrate that learning in both formal and informal assessment situations.
And this ‘virtual tutorial’ aims to help readers succeed in these goals, despite the 'hidden curriculum' and the often conflicting pressures within their learning situation.

SIMPLY PROFOUND
I cannot believe there is no review for this which is why I am doing it, from a personal see me feel me standpoint, coz I'm old like that. Maybe because it's an english book of the modest open university don't blow your horn approach which has this book so quiet whilst other mega hype bollux books sell the 'secrets' of success for 50 bucks +.
OK, now my story of how I was introduced to this book over 3 decades ago whilst on the Rapid Track at college in London, we were mostly international students paying big fees so wanted to complete courses in half time. We had special Study Techniques which were incredible, the only experience I've had so profound in changing behaviour was The Alexandra Technique in adjusting how we sit, walk, talk etc.
Our Study Techniques had us adjust our patterns of reading, writing, skimming, discussion by simply minor modifications whose affects were incredible. Remember we were international students, from all parts of former British empire yet we were all equally affected. We passed in half the time of regular students, I went onto study in the US where the simple profound study approach of Derek Rowntree became habitual.
I have not mentioned any of the 'techniques' here as much cognitive research has been done since with many books and videos on sale those days. But none put it in such a simple and profound way with NO hype, like this beautiful simple book does.
It's the simplicity of these techniques which is why I rate this book so highly, so small, so light with NO hype and has disappears off my shelf numerous times because it's so simply profound.

My Seductive Cuba is a unique travel guide.

Author Chen Lizra takes travel guides to a new level. This very informative guide will take you wherever you want to go in Cuba. She explains the people, the culture, the ambiance and the all that makes Cuba the country it is.

The reader is lead on a journey deep into the soul of Cuba and Cubans alike. You are shown the mystery of seduction and how to be prepared for it if you intend on traveling to Cuba. You are given detailed descriptions of the landscapes, the streets and how to prepare yourself for any emergency.

Everything one needs to know about traveling to Cuba is shared including customs, passports, visas, currency, and much more. You are shown what to pack for each season, opportunities to find the best dance clubs, tips on health care and water, toilets and their filth are explained and how you should always carry the basic essentials with you wherever you travel.

The author explains opportunists and what to stay focused on if accosted by such people. The different styles of dance are explained and what to expect on any dance floor. We are also given a glimpse into the history of Cuba, her politics, her heroes and her survival.

The book gives examples through pictures and extra reading suggestions are given as well as, web sites to further investigate your trip to Cuba. The author has given lists of countries that are eligible to travel to her shores as well as which airlines and travel agencies are best suited for you. This in-depth guide will give you everything you need to know about traveling to Cuba and where to find more if it doesn't.

I would give this a five out of five stars, as a travel guide it is one of the best I have ever read. I loved the charm and direction the author wrote with and her explanations of Cuban society was interesting to comprehend. Chen Lizra created a romantic ambiance within these pages that the reader finds it hard to resist the urge to travel to Cuba and investigate for yourself what Chen is tantalizing you with.

I found the explanations about the culture and the people to be excellent, something you don't find in most travel guides. Her descriptions go beyond the "cut-and-dry" approach found within most guides. You are swept up in the prose and can almost feel yourself seductively swaying beside the author as you tour the history found within the boundaries of Cuba.

My mother has had the pleasure to travel to Cuba and is looking forward to her return; she loved the people and experience and I was able to see the correlation between her memories and the words shared by the author. However, I'm not so sure about the seduction aspect of the Cuban way, I am a Canadian with old-fashioned principles and I am quite shy when it comes to any kind of attention, so I'm sure I'd be blushing a mad storm if I were ever fortunate enough to travel there myself. Thank you for the tip on that Ms. Lizra, I thought my mother was exaggerating and now I see, she was not!

Even if you are not traveling to Cuba, this book will give you a different outlook on the Cuban people with an honest and invoking approach. The political myths are explained with clarity and gives the reader a different insight into the embargo between the United States and Cuba. Thoughtful, informative and witty, My Seductive Cuba is a travel guide you won't want to miss!!

HER SEDUCTIVE BOOK

"My Seductive Cuba" is by far the best travel guide to Cuba I have ever read, but it is really much more than that. This fascinating book is by itself a magic voyage to this unique island. Chen Lizra is not only detailing all the practical data which every tourist needs, she takes you along for a tour deep into the intriguing culture, and sub-culture, of the place and its people. In this book, the sophisticated traveler can really feel the heartbeat of Cuba, see the colors and smell the scents. In her personal and most engaging style, Chen Lizra paints beautifully a realistic picture of the true Cuba, guides you about what to do and what not, and provides you with everything you need to make your trip an enriching and fun experience you will never forget. As a frequent visitor to Cuba myself, I highly recommend this book, even for readers who have not planned to visit Cuba any time soon.

Back from a Beautiful Vacation to Cuba

Being a "gringo" in South Florida, Cuba is a big part of life here. I know many people of Cuban ancestry, and Cuban news is a constant on our local television stations. But I had no idea that reading Chen Lizra's book "My Seductive Cuba" would provide me such a delightful and enlightening experience. In fact, I feel like I just spent the last week on the streets of Cuba with Chen as I read of her love affair with the country.

Chen's book is far more than a guide book. It is a personal account of how she fell in love with a charming and seductive country. It offers all the essentials of visiting Cuba whether you decide to go the luxurious hotel route or the far more "raw" approach of a casa particular. This book is a true MUST for anyone planning to travel to Cuba, but also an essential history and analysis of a country like no other. Since Chen is not an American, she gained instant credibility with me when discussing the political situation of Cuba.

I highly recommend "My Seductive Cuba" and commend Chen Lizra on an amazing job done. I now have a new understanding and appreciation of a country that I thought I knew "enough" about, but Chen certainly proved me wrong.

Jordan Mackay is the wine and spirits writer for San Francisco magazine. He also writes “Juice,” the drinks column for Chow.com. His writing on food, wine, spirits, and beer has also appeared in The New York Times, San Francisco, Chronicle, Decanter, Wine Enthusiast, Wine and Spirits, Food & Wine, Gourmet, and other publications. His first book, Passion for Pinot, was published in 2009. He just recently won a 2011 James Beard Award in the Beverage category for his second book, Secrets of the Sommeliers.

Christie Dufault is a San Francisco–based sommelier and wine educator. After five years as Wine Director at Gary Danko and two years as Wine Director at Quince, she is currently a part-time sommelier at RN74 in San Francisco. Her day job is as a member of the wine faculty at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in the Napa Valley, where she has instructed for eight years. Christie is also a visiting instructor at the San Francisco Wine Center, which opened in 2010.

Yes, there are some very good recipes in here but I was expecting a book dedicated to recipes for two people. This cookbook includes chapters such as Hosting Parties and Holidays. It's ok but not what I was looking for.

But Felix's lack of libido soon turns the marriage into a prison, and when he begins to travel, jazzy teenager Zuleika hits the social scene in the urban maze that is Londinium and receives some flattering attention from a visiting Roman emperor, Septimus Severus. The two begin a brief but torrid affair until Evaristo wraps up her thin plot by sending Severus off to war as Felix returns to find that the entire community knows about the affair. Plot problems aside, most of this is an excuse for Evaristo to stretch her poetic muscles as she creates a beautiful, passionate African-cum-Roman woman as seen through the imagination of a highly liberated and sexual 21st-century poet. Despite the occasional burst of purple verse, she succeeds admirably in bringing a difficult and treacherous conceit to fruition, liberally indulging in irreverent asides, vivid vernacular speech and clever puns. The generally high quality of the poetry overshadows the failure of the book to develop into a genuine, full-fledged novel. This quasi-historical novel, written in free verse, offers an irreverent, fun, and amusingly anachronistic portrait of Roman London circa C.E. 210. It is Bridget Jones's Diary meets Austin Powers meets The Fall of the Roman Empire. In swinging "Londinium," the chic Romans often don Armani togas and Gucci duds for their bacchanalian soir‚es. At the age of 11, Zuleika our free-spirited narrator, the daughter of a nouveau-riche immigrant African merchant is married off to an older, mostly absent Roman businessman looking for a trophy wife. While her husband is away, Zuleika (also called Zuky-dot, Zee, Za Za, etc.) manages to fill up her otherwise mundane existence by cavorting with old friends (including a cross-dressing nightclub owner), assembling her personal posse, mourning her lost youth, scheming against disrespectful servants, reading and writing poetry, and eventually having an affair with the Libyan-born Emperor Septimus Severus when he visits Londinium. The scene in which Zuleika attends a gladiatorial battle is not to be missed. Poetry that reads like prose

I had to read this book for a seminar I was going to attend. Not being a great poetry reader I did not expect to enjoy it. I read the book in one session, and after the first few pages did not remember that I was reading poetry. It flows really easily, the language making it very easy to dive into the strange world of the author's Roman London. The modern slang and approach make the setting familiar in some ways, and then the very different customs of the period bring the reader up short. The scene set at the local "games" needs a strong stomach to read. Highly recommended.

The Emperor's Babe: Magnificent Verse-Novel about Roman-era London

I'm very happy I discovered this little-known book; I don't even remember how I first came across it. Regardless, it's one of the best "new" things I've read: a novel-in-verse from 2001 by Bernardine Evaristo about a young African woman in Roman London. This is a book filled with witty anachronisms, a deep heart, and lively poetry. Sadly Emperor's Babe appears to be out of print in the US, but used copies can be had for cheap. If you head over to Amazon's UK page you'll find the book is still in print on that side of the pond, and you'll also find two great reviews from Kirkus (great save for the comment by the Kirkus US reviewer, who loglines Emperor's Babe as "An episode of Sex and the City written by Ovid," apparently not realizing that Ovid wrote Amores and Art of Love, both of which ARE "Sex and the City written by Ovid").

Evaristo is a good poet, and her verses can easily be read as prose for those who are not poetically inclined. She keeps the narrative moving even though there isn't a whole lot of story. In a nutshell, we open in 204 CE with 11 year-old Zuleika, who's grown up on the streets of Londinium. As an African she stands out in a crowd; Zuleika's parents are immigrants from Sudan, and have come here to reap the benefits of a blossoming economy. Mostly ignored by them, Zuleika hops around town with her same-aged galpal Alba and her older friend Venus, a transvestite who runs Mt. Venus, a club which caters to fellow trannys.

One day Zuleika's spotted by Felix, an uber-wealthy Roman who has a villa in London (as well as several others around the Empire). After an arranged marriage which Zuleika's none to fond of, she withers away for a few years, a kept woman, sequestered in Felix's villa while the man himself is out gallivanting about the provinces. The story picks up a few years later, in 211. Zuleika, now 18, is close to the boiling point, frustrated with her boring life, missing her youthful exploits with Alba and Venus. Then one day at a theater performance she's spotted again, this time by visiting emperor Septimus Severus, who throws ga-ga eyes her way. Soon they are engaged in a torrid affair.

What makes the book so special is the anachronistic verve with which Evaristo writes. The gulf of time disappears between Zuleika's era and ours when we read that she's sent flowers from "Wild @ Heart, a trendy flower boutique," when Zuleika and pals watch a proto-punk band (complete with lead singer "Mad Marcia") perform at Mt. Venus, when we meet an African poet named "Manumittio X" who writes revolutionary verse which always begins with "Take these chains from my heart" and ends with "I just wanna be free." Not only this, but playful references to Armani and current pop culture and current British slang pepper the book, and rather than coming off as annoying it instead puts a big smile on the reader's face.

The characters are all fully realized, especially Zuleika - though this should be expected, as she narrates, her voice carrying the story. Septimus Severus comes off like the harsh-speaking ruffian he most likely was, though the book (and its back cover blurbs) misleads by referring to him constantly as "The African Emperor." This leads an uninformed reader into believing Severus was black, when in fact he was as caucasian as Caligula, despite his African birth. (Please note I state this only for historical clarity.) Alba is a tomcat who bickers with Zuleika endlessly, and Venus is a mentor with a heart of gold and a cache of one-liners. Even Felix comes off as likeable, despite that Zuleika says he's "thrice my age and thrice my girth," despite that he sequesters our heroine into a boring world, and despite that he engenders the tragic ending which casts a pall on what is otherwise a candy-colored romp through Roman London.

So then, a poem-novel to be enjoyed by a wealth of readers, from Classics buffs to chicklit fans to those who look for anything out of the norm. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, the anachronisms delight, and the characters stay with you. Decades ago Fellini boasted that his film "Satyricon" was a science fiction movie, only taking place in the past rather than outer space; Bernardine Evaristo can lay a greater claim to having accomplished this: her story takes place in a world utterly alien yet somehow familiar. Very helpful

I've referenced the Malachi portion of this volume (not Haggai), but based on that I'm very pleased. The work is scholarly, obviously well-researched, and yet within the main text things like transliteration and footnoting make it pretty accessible. (Hebrew and deeper arguments appear within the footnotes for those so inclined) As an added bonus, there are occasional "Excurses," where the authors include essays on topics related to the text at hand, yet at a depth that likely wouldn't be appropriate for inclusion in the normal commentary context. (For instance, there is one on how the matter of Tithing relates to New Testament times).

This is one of the more helpful commentaries I've consulted on Malachi, and I certainly recommend it.

This has been written to appeal both to the theologian and the layman. The author's in depth research and scholarly notes will be beneficial to the pastor. While the layman will have an appreciation of the understandable presentation of each verse.

Content poor and not good explained

The content of this book looks a bit childish. If someone is learning English, this always means textbooks with childish contents. I thought the 'Business English Books' would be different, but it is almost the same. However, the exercises are not really helpful, the audio cd is good.

It makes great use of sketches and role plays, and references to actual companies and situations and for a trainer with little business experience it is easy to use.
