Great memory, thank you Amazon

I read this book in junior high school, now over 50 years later, it was just as exciting and interesting. Written by a person who had actually joined the carnival and travelled the circuit and experienced the life of a 1950's "carny", the book is a real learning experience into a subculture of America that has all but disappeared.

Daniel Mannix was told early to write what you know and the authenticity will show. Step Right Up shows that in clear detail. A small portion of his life was spent in a traveling carnival where he wanted to know the secrets of the carny circuit and learn he did. First as a fire eater and adding sword swallowing, escape artist, and a mentalism act. All in a very short time. Those wanting to try these should think again as they are possible and still dangerous. The narrative covers life as they traveled from place to place, the life of a wandering gypsy with no home but the carnival. The personalities are lovingly given in their humanity, their entire lives on the road. He offers simply drawn pictures of the people and the five legged horse. The end of the book includes an index of the people. His personal experiences are not sugared over. Think what you will - that's their life.
What drew me in was a choice of living I've never done and yet we dream of it. He lived even if it was only for a short time. Thoughts, life choices, whether free spirited or bitter sweet are here for the reading. Secrets revealed. A really cool book for those of who have wondered and lived safe.
Remember about Daniel P Mannix Kindle books - they are not cheap so you will pay a more expensive price. If you don't mind it, this is a good book to understanding the carny life. Step right up!

Step Right Up, Ladies and Gentlemen!

Excellent account of carny life in mid-20 century America. Mannix's account is not so dark and despairing as Gresham's *Nightmare Alley* (also highly recommended), but he doesn't shrink away from the trials of life on the midway. Definitely worth a read, entertaining and edifying. Some would say it is not an essential part of your Kindle collection, but I say that in here there are wonders, my friends, WONDERS to be had Step right up! For one low price you can ... *ahem*

(Seriously, if you want to learn the fine art of midway pitching this, along with Don Boles' guide, will help enormously).

An engrossing story of a brutal age....

The saga of Hernando Ruiz - contemptously referred to as the Nazarene for been the offspring of an Arab girl and the Catholic priest who raped her - has all the trappings of an epic - history, adventure, horrendous cruelty, deceit, hate, fortunes made and lost, love, betrayal and revenge. Spain's late 16th - early 17th centuries history is not widely-known therefore the detail may well be inclined to bog down some readers hence I too was tempted to down-grade the review to a 4 star read. However on the positive side the exciting woven tale of Hernando's trials, triumphs and loves completely consumed me for several days so my five star rating serves to acknowledge that. As mentioned by another reviewer Falcones is a consumnate author cut from the same cloth as Follett's "Pillar of the Earth" and I will certainly be following his future books with keen interest.

A Must Read Book

The story is full of sacrifice, pain and suffer during those sad times of Spanish history. It is a book where you will need to read beyond the words, it is not just a story about historical events, it is an emotional journey, a love story and a beautiful painful one. It is a book that you will evoke raw emotions in you, which you should be prepared for. I definitely would recommend this book.

This book and his other one titled Cathederal of the Sea are in the same league as The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, very easy to read with good story lines throughout. His histoical account of the Spain is very revealing to someone who before this would have been in the dark about the religous turmoil that the country suffered.

Kevin J. Duggan is a renowned expert with more than 30 years of experience in applying advanced lean techniques to achieve Operational Excellence and the author of three books on the subject: Design for Operational Excellence: A Breakthrough Strategy for Business Growth (McGraw-Hill, 2011), Creating Mixed Model Value Streams: Practical Lean Techniques for Building Demand (Productivity Press, 2002), and The Office That Grows Your Business―Achieving Operational Excellence in Your Business Processes (The Institute for Operational Excellence, 2009). In 1998, he founded Duggan Associates, an international training and advisory firm, to assist companies applying advanced lean techniques into their operations. In 1999, Duggan began working with the Lean Enterprise Institute as a faculty member and also as a Director for the Lean Enterprise Institute Canada while he continued to mentor companies implementing lean. Accessible Exposition of Principles but the Devil's in the Details

In this very good book author Kevin Duggan describes an approach to implementing lean manufacturing in challenging environments characterized by a high degree of variety, shared resources, and lumpy demand. All too often in such situations, practitioners conclude that lean principles can be applied incompletely or not at all. Significant missed process improvement opportunities follow from this foundational misunderstanding.

Duggan develops his material using as a case study the hypothetical EMC Supply Company. Value stream mapping is used throughout the book to depict the current scenario and the various improvements to achieve the desired future state.

The author starts at the very beginning, with a discussion of how the proper definition of product families is critical to the creation of flow in high mix plants. He goes on to introduce the concepts of takt time and the pacemaker operation for the process. From there the discussion moves to the balancing of operations, presentation of materials at the point of use, scheduling the work, and dealing with variation in customer demand.

These concepts are applied by the EMC implementation team and are illustrated with an evolving series of value stream maps. As a result the presentation has a "real world" feel to it that should encourage application of the principles.

One significant caveat needs however to be mentioned. Successful implementation is about pressing through countless details in every situation. Duggan draws attention to this in various places writing for example, "Material presentation for a high mix of products will take some creativity and planning. This is an area where we will have to sweat the details".

In fact, in my experience as a lean implementer, the details need to be sweated at every turn. The concepts may be simple, elegant, and often self evident, but putting them into action requires an almost obsessive attention to a myriad of practical intricacies.

For those committed to making this effort the results will be impressive. This book can help make it happen.

Good if you can get past a few drawbacks

If you can get past the first few chapters this book has some useful information. Many Lean books describe the seven (or more) wastes, but this book expands by adding both examples of the waste and the tools used to eliminate that particular type of waste. The book is filled with instructions, examples, forms, and checklists that could easily be adapted to a particular company or department. One checklist that I think will be particularly useful is the Proof of Need Survey. It is a survey that is handed out to employees in an area that will be undergoing improving. The aim of the survey is, through a series of yes/no questions, to gain alignment or "buy-in" to the need for improvement.

The book includes a copy of The 5S Desktop (PC) Pocket Handbook - Using the Power of the Toyota Production System (Lean) to Organize and Control Your Electronic Files and Folders.

The book attempts to be an all inclusive resource for the Lean Office. I always find this to be a poor approach. I'd rather read several good books on narrow topics than one poor book on a broad topic. The authors actually claim "Though this book is comprehensive and should have everything you require, it should be noted that as authors and continuous improvement specialists, we are not arrogant to think otherwise." The text does often come off as arrogant without much information supporting the author's expertise.

Whenever I tried to read this book, I had to force myself to do it and I dreaded it so much. It is extremely boring and bland and includes a lot of unimportant information. It spends so much time repeating the same exact thing for each civilization and does not go in depth on the actually important things. I took AP World History and loved it. It was one of my favorite subjects. But somehow reading this made me start to hate world history. I also don't like how the book includes only two practice tests. I feel like it would be a lot more beneficial if there was at least one more practice test, especially for the price.

I purchased this study book for my daughter to take the World history subject test for SAT and she studied very hard. The SAT test questions were not what was in the book. Does this book need to be updated? Waste of time and money.

GREAT BOOK ON RHYTHM

I have been playing guitar for about 20 years now. I can play some songs and some basic stuff but my timing has always been off. In fact I hate the way I sound. I have recorded myself playing and although I am hitting the right chords and the right notes I still sound like a little kid playing with a guitar but not actually playing it. I tried playing bass in a band and the band was always pissed at me for being off beat. They were gonna fire me but I quit before that I got the satisfaction of saying "you can't fire me because I quit" but still it made me realize how much I suck at timing. I have decided to improve my playing not only in theory but also by practicing rhythm

PROS
*Good rhythm exercises.
*CD tracks are helpful
*highlights the importance of a metronome
*explains thoroughly the different rhythm patterns.
*It explains picking techniques well
*This book will expose you to many different genres. At first I saw one exercise of country and I was like Nah! I am not playing country but I decided to set the metronome at the speed recommended and do it anyway. Well..what do you know? Its great to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. I feel that one exercise alone helped me immensely and its helping me get in sync with the metronome from a different angle.

CONS
*Theory might be too advanced for beginners and the explanation is kind of superficial.
*I would prefer all the chords to be right above each exercise instead of one page at the beginning of each week.

Despite its cons I like this book. I am gonna continue practicing this exercises and hopefully improve. As the author says too many books focus on lead guitar so most people that play guitar don't seem to pay much attention to rhythm. If you are not familiar with guitar theory this book alone is going to confuse you even more. So it would make sense to get a book that goes deeply into guitar theory. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their timing.

If you have Guitar Aerobics you will love this too

Another winner from Troy Nelson. If you have Guitar Aerobics you will love this too. This one is oriented to Rhythm Guitar, but it also has single note licks along with chordal playing (for example in the R & B exercises).And it brings a complete introductory chord theory. Excellent system, progressive exercises, good tips. An excellent book.

Flawed

Despite this book's promise, it suffers from one glaring flaw: it repeats chord progressions. The idea of the book is that each week, a new chord progression is presented, and on each day of the week, you learn how to play the progression in a different style. But once you've gone through a few of these weeks of scheduled learning, you see that the chord progressions are sometimes repeated with the sole exception being they're played in a different key. Sometimes the exercises themselves are repeated verbatim, just moved up a couple of frets to match the different key. What a joke. For a book of this scope that is meant to hone rhythm playing in virtually all styles of electric guitar over a full year of playing, such repeated chord progressions are simply inexcusable. I still give it two stars for the progressions and ideas it does present. But all in all, a serious disappointment.

Romance with just a right hint of miracle.

‘Without You’ is about having faith in your loved ones and destiny. The story explores the depth of young love beautifully and adds just the right miracle at the end to spice up the story. I loved the twist the author throws at the end.

20 years-old Ananya a final year engineering student, comes to spend her vacation with her Grandmother, and falls in love with handsome, wealthy, Dr. Arjun. Arjun is equally besotted with beautiful, talented Ananya. Their love blossoms under her Grandmother’s blessings. Things go downhill when Arjun’s mother comes to know about their romance and thinks of Ananya as a gold-digger. They separate and Ananya is devastated. She tries to pick up the threads of life with the help of her family, friends, and succeeds to an extent, but then Arjun comes back in her life…

Ananya's character is well flushed out as an innocent, bubbly, but emotional 20-something. Her emotions have been captured in detail and beautifully. I felt Arjun should have been given more pages in the story. The middle part of the story seemed a little stretched.

The narration is picturesque and full marks to the author for drawing a scenic story with words. The style and voice fluctuate between contemporary and victorian by using certain words which are seldom used now.

All in all a nice plot and an emotional romance. Looking forward to read more from the author.

Without You follows the life of a young girl - Ananya, as she finds love, then loses it, and then tries to find herself, while picking up the broken pieces of her heart.

The story starts with 20 year-old Ananya visiting her grandmother in Sreepuram. There, she falls head-over-heels in love with the very handsome Dr. Arjun, who works in a hospital, in-spite of the fact that he is the scion of the multi-million dollar Shine Group. Arjun, too, falls in love with Ananya, and soon they even have the grandmother’s blessing.

However, some unfavourable circumstances, lead to Ananya and Arjun going their separate ways, and Ananya’s grief over the loss of her love, propels her into a dark depression. The plot then follows Ananya’s life, as she tries to come to terms with her loss, and move on.

Will she be ever be able to completely forget Arjun? Will Ananya and Arjun cross paths again? If they do - would they still be in love with each other? More importantly - will their love find the strength to conquer the hurdles in their path, this time around? - these are the questions that get answered in the rest of the book.

My Thoughts:

I had distinct experiences while reading different sections; so I am going to review the book in those sections/chunks.

The beginning ( First 25% of the book)

As I started reading, the first thing that caught my attention, was the vivid description of the picturesque Sreepuram. Describing places is clearly the author’s strong suit, and she has demonstrated that several times in this book - from Sreepuram to Bangalore to Dubai.

My biggest grouse with this section is something which is also my biggest pet peeve while reading romances - Insta Love! (or instant love)

If the book is in the genre of romance - I need to see the characters falling in love, and see the relationship progress. The love story is central to a romance novel, so I don’t like short cuts here.

Which is why, insta-love (an often used short cut) puts me off, and this book had a clear case of the same - Ananya was in love with Arjun, before she even met him. For Arjun too - it was love at first-sight!

Now, I have read enough romances to understand that, yes, there are times when a story/book starts with one person harboring a secret (or not so secret) crush on the other person. But even in those situations - the progression of the love story is shown, which makes it okay (Case in point - Against All Rules by Summerita Rhyane). But in Without You - there was no development or progression shown.

Also, several things (plot/dialogue etc) in this section came across as immature, and juvenile (to me). There was too much repetition, and no subtlety. And this would have been understandable, and completely acceptable, if the characters were 16 or 18, but Ananya was 20 and Arjun was 26.

My thoughts: When I finally started reading, Preethi managed to surprise me. There were quite a few plot twists that I did not see coming. Coming to the story and characters, they are well etched, especially that of Ananya, her grandmother and friends. Coming to Arjun, another version of Mr. Darcy, though he is in love with Ananya, he has his own flaws, which makes him believable. Of course, I could relate to Ananya and love her a teeny bit more.

The description of the places, be it Sreepuram, Bengaluru or Dubai, the author has done full justice in bringing out a clear picture in the minds of readers who haven't been there. Living in Dubai myself, it was fun to see this place through Ananya's eyes. Turning points in the story like Ananya trying to commit suicide and later her coping mechanisms in dealing with her depression are expressed very well making it easy to relate to.

Ananya's traits are borrowed from the author herself, like her love for painting and reading and journaling. This is not just a romance novel, it is a story on relationships and I loved the various themes that Preethi has explored, be it the relationship of Ananya with her grandmother who plays an important role or the friends that Ananya makes in Dubai, they all have a vital place in the book.

I do not want to give too much of the story away, as it will take away the fun in reading it. But read this one, it is an excellent debut and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book from Preethi. The book is well edited and has impeccable language, as is to be expected if you are familiar with the author's blog and her writings, which in itself makes the overall read a pleasant one. A light read, I read the book in a little less than a day. Read it and fall in love!
