Robert Gendler is the world's leading amateur astrophotographer. A physician who spends his free time taking pictures of the night sky, he is the author and photographer of A Year in the Life of the Universe, and his images appear regularly in Sky & Telescope magazine. After I received this book, I downloaded quite a few of the author's images from [...] and had them framed for my home. I can't imagine anything as beautiful as our universe! Rob Gendler's incredible efforts are bringing an awesome appreciation of the universe to our planet. I'm ordering 6 now, and probably a lot more, as holiday gifts.

Beautifully done by a world class imager. During any season of the year the deep sky offers wonderous objects of beauty and wonder. Dr. Rob Gendler has captured the beauty of galaxies and nebula in a spectacular display of color and accompanies each image with useful descriptions.

Truly a book for everyone

I put off buying this book for an entire year. I figured that between the internet and my other coffee-table gee-whiz books, the last thing I needed was another book full of pretty pictures. I was so wrong. Take Rob Gendler's gorgeous astrophotos--there is a shot of Omega Centauri in here that makes me want to weep!--add concise, up-to-date descriptions, coordinates, seasonal sky maps, with every object ranked by right ascension, and you've got a pretty-picture book that doubles as a deep-sky guide and observing planner for backyard astronomers. Plus you will pick the book up just to leaf through it and enjoy it. And the production value is unbelievable, with a solid hardcover and excellent full-color reproduction on heavy glossy paper. I have no idea how they are able to sell this book at this price, but hey, their loss is your gain.

If you are a stargazer, you WILL use this book, and when you do, you will kick yourself for not getting it sooner.

If you're not a stargazer, no worries--if you are even remotely interested in the universe, you will enjoy this book. And it might inspire you to look up.

OLEG V. BYCHUK has eleven years of capital markets experience. If you are making a hedging decision, this is a great book

This book walks through the decision of why and how to hedge against volatile markets. It is written in an a style which is not too intimidating and although there are some formulas, one can pass these by if one needs to. The book is also a concise and efficient read. Overall, this is the book you should get if you or your firm are uncomfortable with unlimited exposure to interest rate, commodity, equity, FX or and other market value movements. It will provide you a logical framework for your decision making.

Timeless Value for an Intelligent Market Participant

As I was reading this book I could not help feeling regret that so few
volumes on capital markets are written like this one. The authors have
accomplished that rare feat of presenting sophisticated material in an
absorbing and accessible manner without cutting intellectual corners
or sacrificing rigour.

Engaging style and readability make this book invaluable for a novice,
but a seasoned veteran will also find many useful insights and
unexpected angles, even in areas of his expertise. From personal
experience, being a long-time financial professional with a background
in mathematical sciences, I was impressed by the authors' ab ovo
explanation of mathematical derivatives; the novel concept of
Equivalent Variation Investment; the guiding principle of the Risk
Management Triad; the beautifully illustrated Scenario Grid and
Synchronised Response Matrix; and the clear but rigorous elucidation

I somehow stumbled across this book after finding the viral video clip montage that Priestley and his coach had uploaded. I was curious about the behind-the-scenes practice that went into the project, so I picked this up.

The lessons within have tremendous utility for anyone looking to acquire a high level of skill in any discipline. I've read almost every popular book in the learning and skill acquisition field. For the uninitiated, EXPERT IN A YEAR will prove a good primer in the various techniques/approaches espoused by these texts.

It goes a step further than most, however - most of the bestsellers are merely theoretical or academic exercises, where the author either interviewed experts, pulled from research papers etc. Biographies of experts often make it seem as if the subject was preternaturally talented - or the bulk of the hard work was done when the author was a child, the discipline forced upon them by coaches/parents or the time available to them because of a lack of other obligations.

While such information is useful, for an adult looking to acquire a skill, the available resources often lack a practical component. 10,000 hours is the de facto benchmark for expert status - but even if you are a university student, with classes, practicing three hours a day, or even one, is almost an impossibility.

What Expert in a Year shows, more than anything, is the level of sacrifice and dedication required to get good at ONE THING. Most books promise the moon, and that we will quickly acquire myriad skills in weeks with little adjustment to our routine. This book shatters this myth completely, and provides reassurance to all those seeking mastery that they are not, in fact, going down the wrong path, and that it is, indeed, quite difficult and full of tremendous self-doubt/challenge. Towards the end, Priestly notes that his social life has declined significantly due to his constant entries in tournaments, and that "[table tennis] had completely taken over [his] life."

Nothing in life comes free, although many other courses and books will promise you as such. The honesty here is refreshing, and seeing a normal person pursue greatness in real-time is tremendously helpful - both practically and psychologically. Recommended for anyone interested in mastery, learning or skill acquisition.

For those interested in learning more about proper practice techniques and what it takes to develop high levels of skill, I would recommend BOUNCE by Matthew Syed (the best book on 10,000 hours and mastery I've read) and MAKE IT STICK by Peter C. Brown/Henry I. Roediger/Mark A. McDaniel. The Bulletproof Musician (blog) is also a tremendous resource for those who are interested in learning an instrument.

Honest, Interesting & Well Written - I'd highly recommend this book

A nice, genuine and genuinely interesting book. Interesting specifically for anyone who's into Table Tennis (like me) but also for anyone who's interested in learning in general, challenging oneself or just reading about other people's experiences. The book is very honest and very well written with plenty of useful references for learning methods and also, of course, resources for table tennis.

It's a bit of a page-turner too - I just bought the book a few hours ago and I'm already 50% through it (I've read more than enough to leave this review, already very impressed - it's a bargain at the price).

Honest discussion of how the author and his coach tackled the challenge of "Expert in a Year." The lessons they learned were more about themselves than about becoming a top ranked table tennis champion in a year. But the year of discipline and practice devoted to a goal paid off in many unexpected and beneficial ways. Lessons in this little book that will benefit anyone.

About the Author
J. Scott Hamilton, J.D., is an Assistant Professor of Management for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, serving as Faculty Chair for the Sky Harbor Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He previously served as chief operating officer of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), after serving as the national organization's general counsel. He is an experienced pilot (Private Pilot with airplane, single engine, land & sea, instrument airplane, advanced & instrument ground instructor ratings, and about 1,700 hours flight time) who has owned several aircraft. He is also an experienced skydiver (with 2,500 jumps) who served as a combat demolition specialist and HALO instructor in Army Special Forces.
 
Dr. Hamilton founded a law firm specializing in aviation law in Colorado, where he practiced law for 25 years and served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Denver, and as an Adjunct Instructor for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and for the Aerospace Science Department at Metropolitan State College of Denver, then served as Senior Assistant Attorney General in Wyoming. He holds a B.A. degree in economics and business from Hendrix College; J.D. from the University of Denver; and LL.M. in aerospace law from Southern Methodist University, where he was named the Easterwood Foundation Scholar. He is currently a Master of Aeronautical Science candidate at Embry-Riddle, pursuing a management specialization.
 
Hamilton has published widely on aviation law, including the "Practical Aviation Law" textbook, workbook and teachers' manual, now in the 5th edition, and Amazon.com's bestseller in the category of "Air & Space." He has received many honors, including induction into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame (1988) and Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame (1998).

Sarah Nilsson is an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a practicing attorney in Arizona, where her practice focuses on aviation/aerospace and business law. She previously managed an Aerospace Magnet program at an inner city high school in Phoenix. Nilsson gained extensive aviation operating experience working as a cargo pilot and flight instructor and now volunteers as a safety representative on the FAA Safety Team. Her research interests include aviation, space, and unmanned aerial systems law.

I was very happy to see the price of this book

Purchased for class. I was very happy to see the price of this book, as I expected $120+ for ANY required textbook.

After paying $120 for college math books that were shipped LOOSELEAF and required me to provide my own binder the great print and build quality of this book is MUCH appreciated. It's fantastic to get a BRAND NEW textbook that I actually get to keep at the end of the semester for a very reasonable price. The content seems up to date and I haven't noticed any grammer, spelling, print or other errors that other commercial educational publishers have been making in their books recently. After reading $120+ books from major publishers that CLEARLY had not been reviewed by an editor (or had ANY quality control whatsoever between revisions) this is a nice change.

The price and readability of this book was GREAT!!! The author is a seasoned attorney/pilot and wrote the book for real people, not lawyers and CEOs. It has been really easy to read and the best part about it is that he gives you REAL advice! He even includes checklists and flowcharts to help describe and guide you through the confusing legal world. It has tons of great information from buying aircraft/insurance, protecting yourself from the FAA, and running an FBO. I don't know how it compares to other legal resources out there, but its good enough for Embry-Riddle's courses.

It is appropriate for general cardiologists who want to learn basic clinical EP and for electrophysiologists/trainees who want a clinical textbook. Also appropriate for internists with an interest in arrhythmias. It is very clincally-based and extremely readable.

About the Author

Shirley Trevena is a successful watercolour artist, internationally renowned for her paintings of still life, flowers and landscape imagery. She is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and has won several watercolour awards – the Winsor & Newton Award and the Llewellyn Prize. Shirley regularly runs painting workshops and exhibits her work annually at the Mall Galleries, London, and The Orange Steet Gallery, Rutland.

New inspiration

Although the title of the book refers to watercolour painting only, artists using other mediums will get inspiration as well.

Shirley Travena dives into the medium with enthusiasm (no tepid, sepia palette here!) incorporating watercolour with mixed media (including of all things, oil pastels and collage) using imagination, flair and ingenuity. The illustrations are vibrant; a feast for the eyes. While tonal values, composition, alignment and other basics are covered, they are presented in an innovative way. No boring lectures here.

The author shows a delightful candour - admitting how hesitant she was when first starting - and even daring to show some of her early works, on which she has since improved. But then she provides creative ways of overcoming problems, including the initial, daunting feeling of confronting a blank piece of paper or canvas. In addition to trouble-shooting, there are numerous ideas for achieving great effects with very simple techniques. Her use of masking tape to create different planes, for example, is very creative.

This is an experienced artist who nevertheless insists there is no 'right' way to create pictures, which is borne out by such headings as "Daring combinations" and "If a picture needs something, feel free to invent it." Whatever medium or style you use, doing some of the experiments and explorations in this book could well give a new lease of life to your paintings, as well as provide inspiration for new works of art.

Uncommonly Brilliantly Fabulous "MUST HAVE"

An internet search of images turned up several VERY intriguing still-lifes full of bright color swatches, lacy textures, and over-lapping objects in a style like absolutely no other artist on earth. Dang! Who's work IS this? Hmmmm! Shirley Trevena. Dig deeper and a plethora of utterly brilliant images, each one as exciting as the last - and I'm thinking, "I have GOT to learn more about this woman! Bought both of her books AND her DVD, and if she ever puts out anything else, I'll get that, too. Most artists are creative, but in usually in a rather traditional, safe sense. Not Trevena. Her work reflects both her knowledge of color and how it's supposed to work, of composition, shapes, lines --- all the elements of the accomplished artist, and then she breaks all the rules and STILL makes it work! Perhaps she has some intuitive, mystical sense about color choice, about playing pale colors against daring and dark hues, and expecially about composition. I don't know. But, if I could collect only one artist's work, I would fill my house with Trevena's. Taking risks, being outside-of-the-box creative is exactly what she has done - inspiring you to do the same. I have well over 100 art books now. Hers are my absolute favorites - the ones from which I've learned the most about taking risks, and feeling giddy with excitement when I'm able to take risks with my own paintings.

great inspiration

I love this book and have read it from cover to cover. Shirley Trevena's paintings are thrilling to look at, the text is very readible and the layout keeps you turning the pages. I have been painting watercolours of flowers and still life for many years but Shirley Trevena shows me new ways to forge ahead, and fun ways to overcome some of the obstacles I have been facing in my work. Congratulations also to Albert Jackson and the other photographers for a truly excellent book. I look forward to the other book by Trevena.

Bishop Boone calls pastors and “Street Revs” to come from all over to empower the inner-city churches of America so they can once again serve as achievement hubs for Black Americans. Once again, he proclaims, Black men and women will raise extraordinary children, oversee quality education, start successful businesses, and achieve the highest goals as they become worldwide ambassadors representing America. In a pointed example, Bishop Boone says that Blacks should stop kneeling in protest for the American National Anthem at NFL football games and start kneeling in protest during the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Yes, American history is filled with examples of degradation and injustice suffered by Blacks. He does not shy away from documenting the sad details throughout this book with hundreds of historical footnotes and primary sources. However, he also shows how Blacks once had the character to prevail over their circumstances by taking responsibility and turning to God instead of government. Every chapter glows with positive encouragement and detailed prescriptions for exciting change. Yes, the failures in American history toward Blacks are detailed but not for the purpose of complaining but for provoking us all to national repentance. Then we can restore success stories to Black life and encourage racial reconciliation, celebration, and hope. Black Self-Genocide: What Black Lives Matter Won’t Say concludes with an outright challenge to all Christians to stop Planned Parenthood in its tracks. The foundation of this prolific organization is built on the rejection of God and the destruction of the family. Founder Margaret Sanger’s eugenic philosophy shows how this organization promotes what many White people still believe today—that there are two classes of people, superior and inferior, and the inferior class is Black Americans. She also called women to rebel against men, against pastors, and against God. Her challenge to become a “Woman Rebel” eventually resulted in the mass hysteria of feticide—women killing their own babies in the womb. Faith and family are the foundations of every stable society. When you destroy the faith and family of Black Americans, you destroy its stability. However, when the destruction is stopped, the rebuilding process can begin again. Bishop Wellington Boone is one of the most influential Black Americans of the century because of his leadership in racial reconciliation. Wellington Boone has brilliantly shined a light on a dark subject

Perspective integrated with the genius of one of the most integral leaders in the church today, Wellington Boone has brilliantly shined a light on a dark subject. Understanding is at the heart of this work, or might I suggest movement. The book is written in the spirit of excellence with high degrees of honor through out the pages. This book does not just simply highlight the problem, it provides scriptural solutions and is timely. I bless this book and all who read it as we journey to truly understand and example truth powerfully. EVERY Pastor, teacher and ministry leader would do well to glean from the pages of this well crafted gem.
